Introducing SWIFT® Evo Wheel Force Transducers

MTS subsidiary, PCB Piezotronics recently introduced the new SWIFT Evo family of wheel force transducers. Based on the renowned MTS SWIFT product line, optimized SWIFT Evo transducers are even more accurate and easy to use while carrying forward the same durability characteristics that major auto manufacturers worldwide have come to rely upon.

Like its predecessor, SWIFT Evo provides high load capacity, exhibits outstanding durability and delivers superior measurement accuracy. Capable of an extremely low end-to-end latency of 250 µsec, SWIFT Evo units can be tightly synchronized with other wheel force transducers, sensors and active systems on a test vehicle. Optimized for saving time and effort, they can be installed and ready for operation in just a few hours.

Designed for both spinning and non-spinning applications, SWIFT Evo transducers are ideal for ensuring data measurement integrity throughout the durability testing process. On the proving ground, they perform Road Load Data Acquisition (RLDA). In the test lab, they are deployed on spindle-coupled road simulators to generate drive files via RPC iteration, and then playout the completed drive file during testing.

SWIFT Evo transducers employ a proven high-stiffness, one-piece design to achieve unparalleled measurement accuracy and long life. Unique among wheel force transducers, this design yields high sensitivity, excellent linear behavior and high overload capacity. High natural frequency provides phase integrity between measured channels across the operating frequency range.

The one-piece design minimizes the number of required gages, enhancing reliability and robustness. Fatigue-rated SWIFT Evo transducers adhere to SAE J267 and J328 requirements, assuring a long life when maintained. Sealed to IP67 standards, they are virtually weather and contaminant proof.

PCB ensures the measurement accuracy of SWIFT Evo with a unique and proprietary multi-axial calibration process. While most transducers are calibrated one channel at a time, SWIFT Evo units are subject to a highly refined, automated process that calibrates the entire transducer assembly, cycling through each channel while simultaneously exciting all other channels.

While leveraging the proven one-piece design and multi-axial calibration, PCB and MTS engineers also worked to develop a more evolved transducer. A key result is the reduction in weight of the most heavily used small and passenger car units (SWIFT Evo 20 & 30) to achieve parity mass with wheels on test vehicles - i.e. the total mass of a suspension with a Swift Evo installed equals that of the original (unmodified) suspension. Advances in accuracy, include improved cross-talk, linearity, hysteresis and thermal performance. A new Transducer Interface (Evo TI) and intuitive graphical user interface streamline and simplify set up, orientation and operation. New support for Transducer Electronic Data Sheets (TEDS) streamlines operation by minimizing calibration value errors during set up.
