What is a compression test?

A compression test is a squeezing or squishing test. Pressure or force is applied from the outside of an object toward the inside to determine how it deforms or breaks. 

Why do people do compression tests?

To find out how an object or material will perform under compressive force and to see if it is strong enough for its intended use. Compression tests can help confirm the strength, stability and safety of materials selected for given applications. A compression test determines properties like compressive strength, compressive yield strength, stiffness, and deformation behavior.

What equipment is needed for a compression test?

Basic equipment for a compression test includes a materials test system, load cell and compression platens. Often, displacement gages are added to collect deflection data, and alignment fixtures are used to help ensure data accuracy.
