Tire Force & Moment Measurement

Gain deep insight into how a specific tire design affects vehicle dynamics.

Testing the force and moment characteristics of automotive tires is vital for ensuring vehicle safety, performance, and handling. These tests evaluate how tires respond to forces during acceleration, braking, and cornering, directly influencing stability and control. Tire manufacturers, automotive companies, and independent testing organizations conduct these tests using advanced, laboratory-based test and simulation systems. The data guides tire design, vehicle tuning, and compliance with safety regulations, ensuring reliable performance under various driving conditions.

Test Methods

Global standards for tire force and moment testing include SAE J1106, SAE J1987, SAE J1988, ISO 8767, and TIMe Standards 1 and 2. These frameworks ensure consistency and precision in evaluating tire-road interactions, critical for vehicle dynamics and safety.

SAE J1106 defines equipment specifications and laboratory conditions for measuring tire forces and moments. SAE J1987 and SAE J1988 focus on procedures for characterizing passenger and light truck tires using flat-belt or drum systems. These methods involve simulating real-world conditions, such as varying slip angles, camber angles, and applied loads. ISO 8767 outlines similar testing protocols for global consistency. TIMe Standards emphasize dynamic modeling and advanced simulation techniques to capture real-time tire responses. These standards collectively support accurate tire performance analysis, aiding manufacturers in optimizing design and compliance.

Test Results
Tire manufacturers, automotive companies, and independent testing organizations use tire force and moment data to optimize tire designs, enhance vehicle stability, and improve handling performance. The data informs and validates tire models, guides suspension tuning, electronic stability control systems, and tire selection for specific applications. It also ensures compliance with safety standards, supports research, and aids in resolving issues like uneven wear or instability.
