Flexure Testing & Bend Testing Applications

Bend Fixture

What is a materials bend test?

A bend test applies force to the center of an object or specimen until the object’s linearity changes, or in other words, it bends. Bend tests can be done with either three or four points of contact on the specimen.

Why do people do bend tests to characterize materials?

To see if an object or material will withstand the bending forces that it will encounter in its intended use. Bend tests help verify material behavior when bending and help ensure products meet safety or quality standards.

What equipment is needed for a bend test?

Basic equipment for a bend test includes a materials test system (also known as universal testing machine or a load frame), load cell and bend fixture. Often, displacement gages are added to collect deflection data.
