What is a tensile test?
In simple terms, a tensile test is a pull test. A pulling force is applied at opposite ends of an object until it stretches, deforms or breaks.
Why do people do tensile tests?
To determine a material or object’s behavior under stress, or to find its breaking point. In addition to measuring stress/strain behavior, tensile tests are used to discover material properties such as Young's modulus, tensile yield strength, elongation at break and Poisson’s ratio. Materials need to be tested to make sure they will be suitable for their intended use.
What equipment is needed for a tensile test?
Tensile testing requires a load frame or materials test system to apply specific pulling forces to a specimen. Grips, load cells, and extensometers are also used to hold the sample, measure force, and track deformation accurately.
