Biomedical Axial/Torsional Testing
Materials used in biomedical devices often fail due to complex multiaxial stresses. Axial/torsional testing helps create more accurate simulations of actual service conditions, offering a valuable way to characterize metals, polymers and other biomaterials under multiaxial stress. Specimens are typically round bars or biological (cadaveric). Tests involve simultaneous application of torque and axial loading. Force ratings vary from 15 kN/100 Nm (3,300 lbf/890 lbf-in.) to 25 kN/200 Nm (5,500 lbf/1770 lbf-in.).
MTS offers all the technology that test professionals need to conduct highly accurate and repeatable biomedical axial/torsional testing. We also bring more than 40 years of experience in materials testing, including domain expertise in biomedical device manufacturing and certification. Offerings specifically related to biomedical axial/torsional testing include:
• Tabletop servohydraulic load frames for a range of force requirements
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Specialized software that streamlines test design, modification and execution
• Axial/torsional hydraulic wedge grips for temperatures from -40° to 177°C (-40° to
350°F)
• All-temperature axial testing hydraulic wedge grips for temperatures from -129° to
540°C (-200° to 1000°F)

Servohydraulic Load Frames
Used for characterizing a broad spectrum of materials for static and dynamic applications requiring higher levels of force generation and more precise control of loads and moments.
