High Strain Rate Testing
Metals, polymers, composites and many other materials are strain-rate sensitive. In other words, their behavior at high strain rates may not be predictable using lower strain-rate (slower) tension or compression tests. High-rate test systems allow monotonic tests to be performed at much higher rates, enabling simulation of strain rates experienced by components during impact events. Common applications include assessing the behavior of steel in automotive crashes, simulating material-forming processes such as forging, and evaluating the susceptibility of solder joints to damage under impact.
MTS offers all the technology required to conduct accurate and repeatable high strain rate tests, including load frames capable of applying forces from 5 to 500 kN (1,100 to 110,000 lbf) and achieving velocities from 1 to 21 m/sec (39 to 830 in./sec). In addition, MTS brings more than four decades of experience in material testing combined with domain expertise in automotive and electronics design. Specific offerings for high strain rate testing include:
• Fatigue-rated, high-stiffness servohydraulic load frames for applications up to 500 kN
(110,000 lbf)
• Tabletop and floor-standing servohydraulic load frames for applications up to 500 kN
(110,000 lbf)
• Digital controllers with high channel density, high capacity and superior configurability
• Specialized software that streamlines test design, modification and execution
• High-rate grips and other fixtures
