Wear Simulation

Wear simulation for implantable knee, hip and intervertebral spinal disc prostheses, as well as dental devices and other joint components, involves multiple degree-of-freedom loading that generates data for device approval, validating processes and continuing development. To complete wear simulations according to applicable ASTM or ISO standards (ISO 14243 for knee, ISO 18192 or ASTM F2624 for spine, ISO 14242 for hip), tests typically complete up to five or ten million cycles at 1 Hz, which translates into 24x7 tests that run for four or five months. These tests are critical for comparing current and new designs with previous generations.

MTS provides unmatched expertise in wear simulation for biomedical devices. Single- and multi-station systems for wear testing products for the knee, spine and hip are available, along with dental wear simulation systems. Significant capabilities of these systems include:

Knee
Six test stations to facilitate statistically significant sampling and minimize testing time
Flexion/extension (My), axial force (Fz), anterior/posterior (Fx) and tibial rotation (Mz),
   including varus/valgus and medial/lateral motions
Options for load soak, force sensing, fluid sensing, test fixturing and temperature
   control

Spine
Six user-friendly specimen containment modules to provide a statistically valid sample
   size
Precise control in four active degrees of freedom plus passive motion in the remaining

Test up to twelve hip prostheses simultaneously
Inclined block and actuators (while axially loaded) are rotated to simulate walking
   kinematics
Corrosion-resistant chambers for blood serum or saline solution house the acetabulum 
   cup or femoral ball

Dental
Test and compare dental materials and techniques, including studies of jaw movement
   and wear
Resynthesize the masticatory cycle (including simulation of the oral environment)
   through coordinated horizontal and vertical actuation
