MTS helps The University of Tennessee (UT) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in their quest to apply state-of-the-art neutron scattering technology to materials science by designing a unique mechanical test system.
 
Getting Particular
 
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Science, has invested $1.4 billion in construction funds for a state-of-the-art Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Facility located at ORNL to provide the most intense pulsed neutron beams in the world for scientific research and industrial development. DOE Office of Science also provides operating funds enabling scientists and engineers to conduct their experiments at the SNS.

Drs. Peter Liaw, Hahn Choo, and the late Ray Buchanan of UT, and Drs. Xun-Li Wang and Cam Hubbard of ORNL, principal and co-principal project investigators, were awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Major Research Instrument (MRI) program to develop an advanced electrohydraulic machine for studying mechanical behavior at SNS. They discussed how MTS technology and expertise are helping to resolve the unique mechanical challenges associated with using a fixed neutron beam to perform in-situ materials characterization.
