Among the greatest challenges for civil engineering test labs is gaining meaningful, real-world data on large civil structures from seismic simulations performed on much smaller scale models. One innovative solution is to conduct shake table tests with larger scale, partial physical specimens and employ real-time hybrid simulation techniques and structural actuators to simulate the remainder of the structure. Tongji University in Shanghai recently collaborated with MTS and University of California-Berkeley to transform this concept to practical reality.
