Volvo Truck Corporation Selects MTS for Heavy Truck Dual-axle Test System

New MTS Heavy Truck Road Simulator Reduces Truck Testing Time and Cost

Eden Prairie, Minn.
May 6, 2008 MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC), the world’s premier supplier of mechanical testing and simulation equipment, is pleased to announce that Volvo Truck Corporation has selected MTS to provide a high-performance, six degree-of-freedom, dual-axle heavy truck road simulator. Volvo is one of the world’s largest truck manufacturers; and they will use this new road simulator to test suspension designs for heavy trucks.

Truck manufacturers used to spend months or even years testing new vehicle designs. Additionally, field testing on the road or proving ground required an expensive, fully-functional, fueled vehicle. Now, with MTS’ new heavy truck road simulator, truck manufacturers can complete testing within weeks. Lab tests can be run any time of day or night, and can simulate all types of weather conditions. Statistically valid testing results are available much faster and at a substantially lower cost than traditional field testing. Faster access to test results allows manufacturers to accelerate design modifications and improve products at a quicker pace than in the past.

MTS is the market leader in spindle-coupled road simulators with more than forty years of experience in developing Series 329 road simulators for the car and light truck markets. This recently developed heavy truck road simulator has the capability to run real-time simulation tests up to 50Hz in all directions, and will test new truck designs in an efficient and affordable manner. It has the capability to accommodate two single axles or a double axle (bogie). The system will be delivered to Volvo as a turn-key system including 24 channels of actuation and control as well as a modular reaction frame system for specimen restraint.

With the development of this new high-performance spindle-coupled road simulator, and the previous installations of other heavy truck road simulators, MTS has added to its growing portfolio of heavy truck products including: tire-coupled rigs; cab shakers; truck-rated MAST™ tables; SWIFT® 50 GLP (Global Low Profile) transducers; and damper, elastomer, and air spring testing equipment. These products underscore MTS’ commitment to developing innovative solutions for the heavy truck market. With decades of experience and unparalleled expertise in ground vehicles testing, MTS continues to provide industry-leading test systems for cars, light trucks, heavy trucks, and motorsport vehicles and components.
