MTS Selected for Helicopter Survivability System

Eden Prairie, Minn., February 28, 2003 - MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC) announced today that it has received the first $1.2 million award of a projected $5 million plus contract with the U. S. Army. The contract is for a Ballistics Tilt Table that will support the work being done by the Survivability/Lethality Analysis Directorate at the U. S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Aberdeen, Maryland.

The Survivability/Lethality Analysis Directorate provides analysis and expertise to the Army in the area of survivability, lethality, and vulnerability over the entire life cycle of major Army systems. The Directorate's work includes testing the survivability of helicopters when damaged in critical areas by munitions. Army commanders use this information to determine which aircraft are best suited for specific missions. With this new positioning platform test engineers will be able to fire projectiles from various angles at the underside of operating helicopters to better simulate conditions the aircraft are exposed to when used in combat.

"The Army's selection of MTS is another validation of our unique competency in designing and building systems that deliver precise force and motion control," said Donald Krantz, MTS Vice President, Advanced Systems Division. "This particular award resulted from a study in which we helped ARL generate and evaluate concepts that would satisfy their need. MTS has the breadth of skills and experience to handle the complexities of dynamically positioning and restraining an operating helicopter."
