MTS Introduces Model 353.20 High-Frequency Multi-Axial Simulation Table (MAST) System

Eden Prairie, Minn., May 31, 2005 – MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ: MTSC) today announced that it is introducing a new high-frequency Multi-Axial Simulation Table (MAST) System. Model 353.20 features a compact design, higher frequency of operation and advanced acoustical features to enhance squeak, rattle, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) testing. MTS will showcase its MAST technology at the 2005 Automotive Testing Expo Europe, May 31 – June 2 in Stuttgart Germany.
MTS’ high-frequency MAST system accelerates vehicle development processes, expands testing options and increases productivity in a testing laboratory environment. Model 353.20 can be used for run-to-failure durability testing, performance testing (vibration transmissibility) or a combination. It produces six degrees-of-freedom of vibrational motion, has the highest frequency capability of any servohydraulic MAST system and can accommodate loads up to 680 kg (1500 lbs.)

“MTS has the largest installed base of MAST systems in the industry today,” said Sidney W. Emery, Jr., MTS chairman and chief executive officer. “We have a unique ability to deliver custom and standard MAST systems quickly and efficiently. With Model 353.20, our customers have access to an innovative testing platform rich with features at a lower cost than competing products.”

The relatively small and compact model provides customers with more flexibility because it can be used in smaller laboratories. Model 353.20 is easily integrated with environmental chambers for temperature and humidity testing in connection with vibration testing. Because the unit is smaller, there is less risk of damage to sensitive equipment in the test environment. Customers are currently using MTS MAST systems for applications ranging from CD player testing to component testing applications outside the automotive industry.

“MTS' six degree-of-freedom high frequency MAST allows us to test our electronics products under realistic conditions in a laboratory setting,” said Marko Martin, product quality engineer for Philips Corporation Automotive Playback Modules Division. “We reduce the time for new developments, are able to improve our quality and have a competitive advantage. MTS’ MAST system is a good investment for the future.”

High-frequency motion on heavy loads requires extraordinary design strength and stiffness. The main motive components of the simulation table, such as the hydraulic distribution system, actuators, struts, swivels and table itself are designed with maximum stiffness in mind. As a result, the table transmits motion and vibration more efficiently to the subject with minimal loss of energy, including sound energy. The six actuators act in concert, not in opposition, ensuring high performance and reducing maintenance needs.

The Model 353.20 simulation table is driven by a high-performance FlexTest™ digital system controller running MTS MAST Control software. MTS also offers a broad array of software options to enhance MAST testing programs.
